A Thai court has issued an arrest warrant for Red Bull heir Vorayuth Yoovidhaya, in a move critics say is long overdue.

Mr Vorayuth is accused of knocking down and killing a policeman while speeding in Bangkok in 2012.

He has repeatedly failed to meet police to face charges, which include reckless driving causing death.

The closely watched case has fuelled criticism that Thailand's 'elite' enjoy special treatment by the authorities.

Mr Vorayuth is the grandson of Chaleo Yoovidhaya, who co-founded the Red Bull empire with Austrian Dietrich Mateschitz.

He was first arrested shortly after the incident and later let go.

He was subsequently summoned repeatedly to face charges, but each time his lawyers said he was unable to do so, citing overseas work commitments and illness. A charge for speeding has since expired.

Prosecutors asked police to request the arrest warrant after he failed to meet another deadline on Thursday.

"A court in Bangkok has approved the request and we've entered the arrest warrant into the system, meaning that police all over the country will be searching for him," Police Col Kajohnpong Jitparkpoom, the superintendent of Thong Lor police district, told the BBC.

"But if he is found to be overseas, then the prosecutors will have to initiate the procedure to have him extradited, if possible."

If found guilty of reckless driving causing death, a charge which expires in 2027, he could be jailed for up to 10 years.

Many Thais have questioned why the police have not tried to arrest Mr Vorayuth before now to face charges.

Before the arrest warrant was issued, the office of the attorney-general said it would explore applying for extradition of Mr Vorayuth, who it said was recently seen in London, if a warrant were issued

‘Boss Red Bull’ Allowed to Leave 3 Days Before Warrant Issued

BANGKOK — The scion of an energy drink empire wanted for a fatal hit-and-run left the country just three days before a warrant was issued for his arrest, police said Tuesday.

Without the warrant, an immigration police commander said they were powerless to stop Vorayuth “Boss†Yoovidhya, 32, from leaving the country, despite him being a suspect in a fatal car crash five years ago that made him the poster child for injustice in the kingdom.

“There was no request from the prosecutors to detain him,†Maj. Gen. Natthorn Prosunthorn said. “Immigration can only stop someone from traveling if there are requests from state agencies, or if there were court warrants. We had neither.â€

Vorayuth left the country on his private jet seven days ago on April 25, reportedly bound for Celestar Airport in Singapore, Natthorn said. Police applied for and obtained a warrant on Friday, three days after his departure.

Asked whether it was right to allow a suspect who’s repeatedly evaded summonses from prosecutors to leave, Natthorn said to do otherwise would have infringed on Vorayuth’s rights.

“If we stopped him, it would have violated his constitutional right to travel,†the commander said.

The authorities said they would taken action after public rage reignited yet again in late March, after the Associated Press caught up with Vorayuth at a residence in a posh London neighborhood where he drives a Porsche Carrera with license plates “B055 RBR,†or Boss Red Bull Racing, a name he uses on social media.

The report called attention to the life of luxury he has led since causing the death of Thonglor police Sgt. Maj. Wichian Klanprasert in 2012 when Vorayuth slammed into his motorcycle on Sukhumvit Road, dragging his body from his Ferrari for some distance before fleeing the scene.

Vorayuth’s lawyers have said the officer swerved unexpectedly in front of his sports car, a claim forensic examiners disputed.
