BANGKOK: -- The Foreign Ministry has revoked former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's two passports after reaching the conclusions that his recent interview has affected the security and the country's reputation.

An investigation is underway and criminal charges could be pressed against the self-exiled Thaksin.

The revocation of U957441 and Z530117 passports became effective on Tuesday and was announced on the Foreign Ministry's website on Wednesday.

The decision follows an alert from security authorities regarding Thaksin's interview, part of which, they believed, would have an impact on the security, reputation and integrity of the Kingdom.

The ministry agreed that the interview violated the ministry's regulations regarding the holding of a passport.

Takky stirred them up by speaking for "democracy" at a foreign gathering recently. He fired a shot across the junta's bow. Now they are returning the compliment. He should have expected it.

His passports had been revoked long ago, when he refused to return home and stand trial. But when PT got back in, they promptly returned them to him. Now PT is out and he loses them again. (But PT promises to return them whenever it gets back in. It's sort of like watching a tennis ball go back and forth.)

p.s. From the photos Thaksin's hair had become prematurely shoe polish black. He has no worries about passports though, since he has several from other countries.

You really have to wonder, regardless what if any side you are on,

"They" have had multiple coups against Thaksin, and only now revoke his passports?

It's a coup, they can do anything they like, and it takes them 10 years.

Amazing, seriously amazing

I quite agree, what took so long? Did they have to wait for him to get a good one? Like Aus or NZ? Or is he still a Montenegran Mountie?

"Montenegrin officials have not publicly commented on how Mr Thaksin obtained the country's citizenship." - BBC

Rumor says he paid US$1 million for it. The nice thing about it that's he's now a citizen of the EU and can travel freely through virtually all of Europe. He also has numerous other passports.

Thaksin Shinawatra is now carrying six passports issued by foreign countries, Puea Thai MP chief Chalerm Yubamrung says.

Mr Chalerm recently visited the former prime minister in Dubai but was unable to give details of which countries had issued Thaksin with the passports.

Nicaragua reportedly issued Thaksin with a diplomatic passport when he was selected to promote the country’s trade and investment.

Thaksin may also have obtained a passport from Montenegro. Mr Chalerm yesterday confirmed Thaksin planned to buy an island off the Montenegrin coast in the Adriatic Sea.

Mr Chalerm said his trip to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) focused on business opportunities. No political issues were raised with Thaksin, he said.

Thaksin often travelled from place to place in a helicopter he bought from the owner of the luxury Harrods store in London, Mr Chalerm said.

The former prime minister is living in exile after fleeing the country while awaiting trial on charges of abuse of power while in office over the Ratchadaphisek land deal.

Apparently he's not very familiar with the story of Princess Diana - vehicles from that guy are of dubious reliability.... Although perhaps he sold the store in the meantime...
