Redbaron
While the option to simply buy a new PC or Apple is there, and I'm certainly considering it, I don't particularly like throwing money away when my current laptop does the job, or has the guts to do more than I need it to do. She may not be the fastest or flashest machine around, but for surfing the web, doing a bit of work related word processor stuff, watching the odd funny youtube clip, checking emails, playing simple games (eg facebook stuff and the boy plays a few simple games - nothing massive memory wise), and downloading porn quality documentaries and classic movies... The 3yo Acer laptop is doing the trick nicely. BUT She's slowing down a bit, no, a lot at times, and is getting "cluttered", so the plan (in my simple mind) is to transfer files I want to keep onto an external hard drive, wipe the whole machine, and start again. While I'm at it, a new OS could be the goods. I'm after something that is easy to use (as I'm guessing they all may be), and will still run the usual programs. For work, however I will need to be able to use Windows Office stuff (Powerpoint, Word, Excel, Notepad etc). Any ideas? Have heard Linux or Opera could be the goods? Thanks for any advice guys. Flashermac
I've heard computer swots rave about Linux. But it's beyond any need I have with a PC. I still chug along on clunky old Microsoft. An IT fella told me Mac only looks good because Microsoft is even crappier.
khunsanuk
Hi, I guess you could try Ubuntu. No Microsoft Office for that, but you can get the free Open Office which loads / saves Word files (Word, Access, Powerpoint (I think), Excel). It's fairly similar in use to Windows. Sanuk! Coss
The Mac/Windows comparison is like the Mercedes/Lada comparison. Linux = Mclaren got to know what you're doing
khunsanuk
Hi, "The Mac/Windows comparison is like the Mercedes/Lada comparison." Hardly. It all depends on what you are doing with it. One of my friends has been using a Mac for the last 6 months or so, and is cursing it roundly at any chance he gets. He uses it to develop software and doesn't have a good word to say about the development environment. Sanuk!

khunsanuk
Hi, He can't. The development is for iPhone, and as far as I know you can only do that on a Mac. Sanuk!
Coss
In which case my commiseration's are in order. The Mac really is for advanced consumers / techno nerds IMHO windows is because we have accountants and linux is what developers should use
khunsanuk
Hi, "The Mac really is for advanced consumers / techno nerds" Odd. My feeling is that the Mac is for those people who don't ever need to change stuff, don't need to do anything powerful with the machine. Certainly not for techies, but more for 'artsy' people who really don't know how to use a computer. Sanuk!

Historically, like in the 80s and 90s Windows: Average Consumers, GAMERS, Nerds Mac: Creative elite (designers, artists, e.g.). A Mac with design software (Photoshop, Quark, etc.) and a scanner did cost at least 10.000 - 15.000 USD, usually more - and Unix nerds Linux: only Nerds, no one else was able to run it. Of course this has changed.
