Discovering Soi 33

In the taxi, on the way back to my hotel, I realized that at 1100 PM, I didnâ??t have dinner yet. As my knowledge of Bangkok leaves a lot to be desired, after I spotted the first McDonaldsâ?? that was indicated to be open 24 hours, I asked the cab driver to drop me, somewhere between Asok and Phrom Pong BTS stations instead of the hotel a few soiâ??s ahead. I didnâ??t have the courage to try finding some decent restaurant at such late hour.

The McDonaldâ??s was fairly busy for the time. In front of it, some people were hanging out, mostly females; hard to say who was â??workingâ? and who wasnâ??t. Inside, there were several groups chit-chatting in the â??McCafeâ? area. In the fast food itself, three or four tables were occupied. As I ordered, a group got in, two males and three females. I couldnâ??t decide if the guys were Thai, at least one of them looked rather Japanese; he also looked in advanced state of drunkenness (Perhaps even stoned?). The women were not stunning beauties, however, they had that particular aura of sexual attraction that made me extrapolate they were at least easy girls and quite possibly paid-for â??girlfriendsâ?Â.

Strangely enough, despite there were a bunch of available tables, the girls decided to pick the table right next to mine and sat on the banquette side where I was. One of them, arguably the prettiest, charmingly smiled at me. I reciprocated, wondering if it was a subtle hint that I was welcome to open a conversation and maybe join the group in order to balance the male/female ratio. Iâ??m always annoyed with that kind of tortured thought I have. Actually I often get similar situations, unknown women smiling at me with a body language that makes me think of a seduction dance. In my forties, I still canâ??t decide whether Iâ??ve missed a lot of â??opportunitiesâ? or if itâ??s just me misinterpreting female behaviors.

Anyway, even if there were any remote chance to join those folks in their nightly adventures, I was not in the mood for a wild party night. Actually, as time goes by, Iâ??m less and less often in that mood. However, I was totally in the mood to find a way to relieve that familiar feeling of mixed booze-thirst and horniness, typical of those lonely nights away from homeâ?¦

After finishing my burger, I left the MDâ??s and started walking along Sukkhumvit, observing. It was actually the first time that I was exploring Bangkok by night that way, instead of from inside a cab. The first time as well that I saw those open-air â??barsâ? made of 2 or 3 picnic tables and a stock of Singha beer. I spotted a few ones where a Farang was sharing a beer with one or two girls. Most of those girls were not very attractive, at least the ones I saw; however, they seemed to know how to have fun. I was tempted to just sit down and have a beer and, maybe a laugh, but my instincts (confirmed afterward by some reading on Thai360 forums!) told me that it was bearing high potential for unwanted drama and misadventures.

I chose to keep on walking. At some point, a group crossed my way, a bunch of farang girls most probably in their late teens, calling a taxi. All stunners, out for some wild Saturday night. â??Gee, I thought, even the western chicks are super-hot in BKK by night!â? The fugitive vision achieved to make me totally horny. I continued walking ahead.

Actually my subconscious was guiding me to a soi that had a restaurant where I had dinner before, in family. At that time, I noticed from a distance that there was some nightly activity there.

Thatâ??s how began my first Soi 33 experience. I soon discovered that the whole soi was bordered by bars; all of them â??guardedâ? by an army of rather pretty girls that, you could guess, were not there to handle security matters. Disappointingly, those special sentinels were not as aggressive as Iâ??d want them to be at inviting the potential customers to â??get in and have a look/drinkâ?Â, if I owned those bars. Thatâ??s what decided me to choose the Napoleonâ??s: at least I was greeted cheerfully and invitingly by those fine ladies, especially one of them, a real stunner, wearing a smart-looking black dress, and who looked like she was not yet in her 20â??s (but I might be wrong, here, Asian girls are great at looking younger than they are). The adorable miss even escorted me inside the bar and thatâ??s when I somewhat screwed up.

In the center of the Napoleonâ??s is a circular bar where several girls were gathering around two middle-aged farangs that seemed to be regulars. Instead of joining there, I chose rather to sit at the other bar at the left side; I was not really in the mood for socializing with strangers. The girl seemed hesitant, whether to follow me there or not, and I didnâ??t have the promptness to encourage her to do so; being new to the place and foreign to the local mores, I was clueless on how to do that properly. Sadly, she turned around and went back outside at the entrance.

I ordered a Jack Danelâ??s on the rocks and observed quietly, waiting for what would happen. My philosophy is that if nothing happened it would be at their loss anyway. Although it seemed to have lost the splendors from its glorious times, the place was interesting, with a pleasant atmosphere and some good rock music; Iâ??m not generally that much into that genre but the songs that were played are ones I could approve of. I noticed a backroom with a pool table and a lateral room that probably was designed for more privacy. Despite the open door, I didnâ??t bother checking it out; it might have looked odd of me to cross the whole bar and have a peek.

I noticed some movement in the pool table area, there must be toilets and dressing room for the girls behind it. More strange, I saw a farang following a girl and disappearing where, it seemed to me, was a staircase (could it be that there are ST rooms over there?).

Talking about dressing room, the ladies apparently were divided in two groups, with specific outfits; one category was in decent black dresses while the other one wore light beige business suits (or something like that) and skirts that were slightly longer than a belt. I wondered if that had any signification, hierarchy or something; but there was no one to ask. The barmaids seemed to be carefully avoiding any eye contact with me.

I had finished my first drink (fast drinking is one of my great weaknesses!) before â??somethingâ?? happened, in the person of a jovial mature chubby lady (Iâ??d say in her 50â??s), dressed in a cute blue/green flowered dress, who introduced herself as Mama-san. â??Do you want lady drink with you?â? I acquiesced, trying not to show excessive enthusiasm. â??Wait for meâ? she said and then she went outside. I was a little bit disappointed that she didnâ??t offer me to pick a girl by myself; neither did she give enough time to mention I would have liked the pretty miss that welcomed me. However, I like surprises so I waited patiently, trying to guess what kind of companion Ms. Mama-san would find to be the best match for me.

Hope you check your bill, bill padding occurs at napoleon bar.

Soi 33 = usually not pushy girls and quiet bars, the main difference between soi cowboy and soi 33?

Girls older byt speaking better English, more polite and sometimes better educated, not pushy at most bars.

You want a girl, then you tell her to come sit next to you and you start paying ladydrinks.

Napoleon has ST rooms? This is the first time I hear that.

Something puzzles me: At which Mcdo did you eat???

There is one just next to Suk 19 at Robinson, one at Major Ekamai and of course one at Emporium, do you mean you walked from Mcdo Robinson up to suk soi 33???

I always thought it was one had naked girls that shuffled around a stage before coming to ask for a drink and the other had fully dressed girls that expected you buy them a drink?

I was just wondering. The couple seemed to go in the backroom and disappear, is all. Maybe they just sat in a spot I couldn't see.

Yeah, some exercise never hurts, especially after eating a double-cheese...

Honestly I wasn't aware of the distance from the start and I was just exploring at random until I found something "interesting". Now, it's not that long a walk... 1 km?

Not a very long walk but when it is hot it can be a damn long one.

Possible napoleon has now ST rooms as it has been more than two years since I did not go back there due to their bill padding habit and there are better bars in the soi.
